Projects must also secure a letter of support from a school district that participates in the Iowa Farm to School Program and sources at least 15 percent of its produce from within a 150-mile radius.
Application realities include the Iowa Department of Agriculture requirement that all on-farm filming occur during daylight hours outside of active harvest windows from September 15 to October 31. Crews must complete a one-page biosecurity form acknowledging restricted movement between livestock and produce zones. Districts in the northwest and southeast corners of the state enforce additional wind-erosion filming restrictions during spring months.
Fit assessment favors projects that pair one urban district, such as Des Moines or Cedar Rapids, with one rural cooperative located in a county reporting annual farm income below the state median of $72,000. Proposals without this paired structure score lower during the initial eligibility screen. Iowa reviewers also verify that all produce shown on camera carries current Iowa Department of Agriculture inspection stamps before final cut delivery.
