Iowa State University Study Design for Multifamily Recycling Data
Iowa's multifamily housing stock is smaller and more dispersed than neighboring states, with most properties located in Ames, Cedar Rapids, and the Des Moines metro. Baseline participation data exist only for single-family routes; multifamily diversion rates remain unmeasured at the state level. Outcome_first grants therefore support a structured data-collection protocol run through Iowa State University rather than immediate equipment purchases.
Researchers will deploy standardized contamination audits at 60 properties across five council of governments regions. Property managers receive temporary access to weigh scales and training on material categorization. The resulting dataset will include pounds per unit per month, contamination fractions, and seasonal variation tied to university calendars in Ames.
Applications require a letter of commitment from a local government or hauler willing to share route-level tonnage data under a data-use agreement. Findings will be published with county-level breakdowns so that future grant rounds can target the lowest-performing service areas. The protocol specifies a minimum 24-month observation window to capture both academic-year and summer patterns.
This university-led measurement approach does not match Minnesota or Nebraska programs that rely on existing municipal reporting systems; Iowa lacks centralized multifamily tonnage records, making primary data collection the required first step before funding bins or trucks.
