Iowa Digital Art Workshop Outcome Targets
Iowa sets measurable targets for each funded digital workshop: at least 85% of enrolled students must complete a finished digital portfolio piece, and the hosting school must report a 12% increase in students passing the state’s computer-science competency exam within two semesters. Data are collected through the Iowa Department of Education’s existing student information system.
These targets matter because Iowa ranks 38th nationally in high-school computer-science course availability, with the largest gaps in districts outside the I-35 and I-80 corridors. Schools in the 4th congressional district average 0.6 certified computer-science teachers per 1,000 students, compared with 2.1 in Polk County. Workshops therefore concentrate instructor time on districts showing the widest gap between enrollment and certified staffing.
Implementation requires instructors to use only software already licensed by the Iowa educational technology consortium, avoiding new subscription fees. Each grant also funds one site visit by a regional education agency staff member who verifies that student work is saved on the school’s server rather than personal devices. Post-program reporting includes both the portfolio completion rate and the number of students who later enrolled in advanced computer-science electives. Schools that miss targets by more than 10% are ineligible for subsequent rounds until they submit a corrective staffing plan.
