Iowa Caregiver Geographic Spread Iowa's 99 counties contain 186,000 residents aged 65 and older living alone, with 47% residing in counties that have fewer than one adult day center per 5,000 seniors. State long-term care reports document average travel distances of 38 miles to the nearest licensed respite provider in western and southern Iowa.
Family caregivers in these areas are predominantly women aged 50 to 64 who also work at least 30 hours weekly in agriculture-related or manufacturing jobs. Workforce data show these caregivers lose an average of 11 workdays annually due to elder care emergencies. Counties along the Missouri River border report the lowest density of licensed home health aides.
Grant applications must document agreements with at least two licensed home health agencies per county for respite slot reservations. One- to three-year timelines require quarterly submission of caregiver stress scale scores collected through Iowa State University extension offices.
Awards support mileage reimbursement at the state rate and printed resource directories updated annually to reflect changes in Medicare Advantage provider networks.
Unlike Nebraska or Illinois applications, Iowa requires explicit rural county coverage ratios because 60% of its population resides outside metropolitan statistical areas.
