The state's concentrated school district consolidation has reduced the number of sites where peer-led programs can operate.

Existing 4-H and FFA structures reach approximately 38 percent of eligible rural youth but lack cardiovascular-specific curricula tied to local food systems. Programs that train student facilitators can leverage these networks while adding content on blood pressure monitoring and family meal planning.

Funding supports stipends for student coordinators and curriculum licensing that aligns with Iowa Core health standards. Sessions occur at existing school buildings and county extension offices during already scheduled after-school blocks.
