Iowa Agricultural Writer Eligibility Criteria Iowa contains 99 counties, 82 of which derive more than 30 percent of total income from agriculture according to the 2022 Census of Agriculture. Writers whose work centers on farm policy, commodity markets, or rural labor must demonstrate either five years of residence in one of these counties or current membership in an Iowa agricultural organization such as the Iowa Farm Bureau or the Iowa Farmers Union.
Eligibility documentation requires submission of IRS Schedule F or a letter from a county extension office confirming active involvement in agricultural production or policy work. Applications lacking this evidence are rejected before scoring.
The state's 15 public universities and colleges maintain agricultural communications programs at only four campuses. Applicants must therefore identify a faculty sponsor from one of these four programs or from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture.
Application realities include a 60-day review cycle that coincides with spring planting; writers must submit letters of intent by February 1 to align with this window. Late submissions are not accepted.
Iowa's transportation network relies heavily on two-lane highways outside the I-35 and I-80 corridors. Budgets for industry-event attendance must include realistic per diem rates based on current USDA Midwest travel data rather than national averages.
The funding overcomes documented financial barriers by covering publication subvention fees and event registration for agricultural writers who meet the county-income or organizational-membership test. Final deliverables must be deposited with the Iowa State University Library's Special Collections on Agricultural History.
