Iowa's rural character and agricultural economy produce distinct readiness requirements for digital storytelling projects. The Iowa Digital Storytelling for Health Advocacy program requires applicants to demonstrate prior use of platforms already familiar to farm and small-town audiences, such as local radio or county fair exhibits, before introducing new blogs or social media.
Broadband availability remains uneven: 18 percent of Iowa addresses lack fixed service at 100 Mbps, concentrated in the 73 counties outside metropolitan areas. Health outcome data from the Iowa Department of Public Health indicate elevated rates of chronic conditions in these same counties, creating a factual basis for narrative projects that address prevention.
Participants must complete a pre-program assessment confirming access to either a county extension office computer lab or a public library with extended hours. The state's 99 counties each maintain at least one extension office, providing a standardized infrastructure that neighboring states lack.
Story topics must reference specific public health metrics, such as Iowa's ranking in the top five states for adult obesity prevalence, rather than general wellness themes. Collaboration agreements with local health advocates require signatures from county public health administrators rather than national organizations.
Unlike programs in Minnesota, Iowa reviewers verify that all digital outputs will remain accessible without paid subscriptions and will include closed captions to accommodate older rural audiences. Reporting includes submission of engagement analytics from the initial six months post-publication, measured against baseline reach data supplied by the applicant.
