Interstate 80 and 35 corridors concentrate larger venues in the central and eastern thirds, while western Iowa relies on county fairgrounds whose electrical systems predate 1975 standards. Agricultural employment still accounts for 13 percent of jobs, producing seasonal labor shortages that affect setup crews during peak harvest windows.
Broadband gaps persist in 22 percent of rural census tracts, complicating online registration and virtual exhibition components. Public transit options between Des Moines and Sioux City remain limited to one daily Amtrak route, raising equipment transport costs for out-of-state exhibitors.
Festival organizers must submit electrical load calculations certified by licensed engineers and demonstrate that at least 35 percent of exhibitors will originate from counties outside the Des Moines-West Des Moines MSA. All temporary structures require wind-load ratings meeting Iowa State Building Code provisions for 90 mph gusts.
